Making Space - Kitchen Organization April 30 2014, 0 Comments

It seems we never really have enough space, especially in the kitchen. With all the fun gadgets and accessories, in addition to you normal, everyday essentials, space fills up very quickly! This is precisely why kitchen organization is so important. It's amazing what organization can do in your cabinets and pantries. The most important aspect of organization, is the plan. Without a plan you will likely buy too many items, not enough items, or not the best items for the space. Take an inventory of what your staples (those items you almost always have in the kitchen), take a look at your cabinet size, shelving and drawer options and sizes. These will all help you figure out the best use of space and ensure you get the organizer that will fit in the space you have available. For instance, would your cooking utensils be better in a drawer or on the counter, should you put your cereal in matching containers or keep them in their boxes. These and many other considerations should be thought about because they will be different for each household. It's a matter of preference and ease. Some pantries are great for stacking boxes, others work better in matching containers. Some you can buy at the dollar store or online. Others are specialty products that are custom ordered. Many times you will need a mixture of both, look at stores like Marshalls and TJ Maxx for some items, a lot of times you can get a great product for a much lesser cost, but remember it is hit or miss and you may not be able to buy another item that matches down the road. For more specialty items your local Home Depot, Lowes and Container Store will have more specific items for your kitchen. And if you are comfortable ordering them online, your options are endless.

What works best for you and your family will be the most efficient, because it is more likely to stay organized if you can use it easily and it makes sense in your families kitchen flow.

Counting on the Countertops March 19 2014, 0 Comments

Kitchen counters are another great place to show some personality and beauty. From simple to abstract; countertop options are abundant. Like your backsplash, countertops need to work with the rest of your kitchen design but are a great place to have some fun as well. Today we will be focusing on the different options for kitchen countertops. Countertop Materials Laminate - The most basic countertop available, although now with many different colors and patterns it gives many options for a small budget. Be sure to be careful with laminate as it is prone to scratches and sometimes staining.
Granite - The natural beauty of granite makes your countertops unique, while providing a durable surface that withstands heat and wear and tear. It does need some TLC to keep it from staining and very sturdy cabinets to hold the weight. [caption id="attachment_325" align="alignnone" width="642"]Granite Countertop - Design by Pezzo Bello Interiors Granite Countertop - Design by Pezzo Bello Interiors[/caption] [caption id="attachment_326" align="alignnone" width="642"]Granite Countertop - Design by Pezzo Bello Interiors Granite Countertop - Design by Pezzo Bello Interiors[/caption]   Soapstone - Soapstone is making it's mark on the countertop market. It is a beautiful light gray changing color as it ages. It can be rough on your accessories as it has a natural roughness. It also needs to be polished and cannot handle knives and scratches as well as granite.
Solid Surface - The options for solid surface are abundant and the beauty of using a solid surface is that it is almost maintenance free. It can however scratch or burn and may need a bit of buffing.
Quartz - An engineered countertop melding the convenience of solid surfaces with the beauty of stone. It comes in many colors and options. Is very durable. But it can sometimes look engineered. [caption id="attachment_330" align="alignnone" width="642"]Silestone Countertop - Pezzo Bello Interiors Silestone Countertop - Pezzo Bello Interiors[/caption] Marble - While this is a beautiful countertop that works very well for baking and can withstand heat, it is very easy to stain and scratch. For this reason we recommend you use this in only a small area of your kitchen.
Tile - Ceramic tile offers limitless options in color and pattern and is very affordable. It handles heat and stains well and is easy to clean, however it can produce an uneven surface making it difficult to work on.
Recycled Glass - The look of recycled glass countertops is very unique. It is very durable, heat and scratch resistant and needs very little maintenance.
Stainless Steel - If you are looking for clean lines and simple beauty, stainless steel may be what you need. It is very strong and can withstand a lot of wear and tear, resists bacteria and withstands heat. However, it will show fingerprints and dent. Because it is completely custom it is quite expensive.
Concrete - Making it's way into more contemporary homes, concrete is a very versatile material. It can be cast in any shape or color and is very durable. However, it does not withstand heat well and needs some TLC (sealing) to avoid staining. [caption id="attachment_328" align="alignnone" width="642"]Concrete Countertop - Design by Pezzo Bello Interiors Concrete Countertop - Design by Pezzo Bello Interiors - more detail here[/caption] Butcher Block - The wood countertop provides a very natural look and feel. However, it will show scratches and can grow bacteria easily. However, the scratches create character and with good disinfecting and oiling these countertops can be great additions to your kitchen.
Paper Composite - This eco-friendly product creates a solid surface look with recycled materials. It withstands heat well and is much lighter than other options. It does, however, need to be oiled and sanded to remain beautiful.
The options are endless. There are quite a few things to keep in mind when deciding on which countertop would work best for you. Each has so many pros and cons. Decide what is important to you and do your research. The countertop is an important part of the kitchen and can be an expensive change down the road. If you need more help on the decision, give us a call and we'd be happy to help you make the countertop fit with the rest of your decor.
